Julie became a Licensed Physical Therapist in 1989. Since then she worked primarily in Sports Medicine, but also taught at Ohio University in their Physical Therapy Program. She developed and ran a successful exercise program for the University focusing on Pre-Natal and Post-Partum Exercise. In 2003 she completed her Personal Training Certification through National Council On Strength And Fitness and in 2004 completed her first Certification in Pilates Mat and Apparatus Training through The Professional Health and Fitness Institute. With a true passion for Pilates, she opened her first studio under the name Body and Mind Pilates Plus in Carpentersville. It was then that she began to pursue her second Certification through The Pilates Institute of America. Following Certification, Julie was chosen as Lead Educator for PIA and, using her deeper knowledge of The Pilates Method, began to offer Certification Training for PIA and opportunities for Apprenticeships in her new studio in West Dundee. Julie opened her newest location in Crystal Lake in July 2008. Julie’s background in Physical Therapy allows her to teach Authentic Pilates Exercise with the Correct Modifications to allow all clients to enjoy its benefits safely and effectively. She is excited to use all her studios to continue to educate new instructors and provide them an opportunity to learn beyond the book. Julie promises that at Body and Mind every client is treated as an individual and Pilates will be an experience, not just a workout.

I first became interested in Pilates as a rumored remedy for my chronic neck and back pain. After a few short months of Pilates, my pain had subsided to a level which I hadn’t seen in years. Not only did I see the benefits in my body and its renewed ability, but I found myself captivated by the benefits to the mind that the time at the studio brought me. Looking for an alternative to my position in the Corporate World, I jumped at the opportunity to become a Certified Pilates Instructor. I am completing Full Apparatus Training in preparation for Certification through the Pilates Method Alliance and I am Fully Certified in Mat Pilates through The Pilates Institute of America. I have found passion in teaching others the life-changing benefits of Pilates to both the Body and the Mind.

Find your Passion, Change Careers and Continue Life-Long Learning. I was inspired to study, teach, and share Pilates and Yoga after seeing the changes in my own body as a student. I began Pilates Instructor Training with Movement Education in 2003 and continued with Pilates Mat Certification and Full Equipment Certification Training with The Pilates Institute of America in 2007. I am currently preparing for the Pilates Method Alliance National Certification Exam. Seeking a deeper knowledge of Anatomy and Bodywork, I completed The Massage Therapy Certification Program with Elgin Community College becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist in 2005. Moving further down the path of knowledge, I completed the 200 hours of Teacher Training with The Lotus Yoga Centre in 2006 to become a Registered Yoga Teacher. Combining Pilates, Massage Therapy, and Yoga creates a wellness strategy that assists the body in reaching its fullest potential. As an Instructor at Body and Mind Pilates, my Classes and Sessions seek to balance energy with effort and awareness and sensitivity to the individual needs of each client.

I began as a client of Julie’s in 2006. My interest quickly moved from my own practice of The Method to learning more about teaching it to others. I am currently completing Instructor Training on all Apparatus and I am fully Certified in Mat Pilates through The Pilates Institute of America. I am very excited to continue to learn and teach all levels of Pilates. I believe that when you are working hard at Pilates and continue to fine-tune the technique, the transformation of the body is amazing.

Angie Shurtleff I began as a client of Julie’s at Body and Mind Pilates in March 2006. The Pilates Method quickly became a Love and Passion, which lead me to begin training under Julie in May 2008. I am Fully Certified in Mat Pilates through The Pilates Institute of America and am currently completing Full Instructor Training on all Apparatus in preparation for Full Certification through The Pilates Method Alliance. Besides Pilates, I hold a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and teach Second Grade.

Claudia Sadlon I’ve been working in the Fitness Industry for about 6 years. I have an Aerobic and Fitness Association of America Group Exercise Certification, and am Body Trainin g Systems Group Power Certified. Over the past few years, my primary focus has been teaching group strength-training classes. In January 2008, I completed my Pilates Mat Certification, and have since completed Full Certification Training on all Pilates Apparatus through The Pilates Institute of America. I love the energy of teaching Group Fitness, and am so excited to be able to bring that energy to Pilates. Pilates trains the body to function properly, but it is so much more than that! It creates a body and mind connection that people feel the minute they step into our studio. We’re passionate about our Pilates – we see its benefits every day and want to share them with you!
